The Fundamentals of Indoor Cycling

Dec 14, 2015 by Brittany M

Spinning is a specific format of indoor cycling and is a cardio workout that's both challenging and fun. Each class is choreographed to music and led by certified instructors who will challenge you with seated climbs, standing climbs, sprints and more! Classes average anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour where one can burn up to 600 calories in one class. Indoor cycling is low-impact with high intensity results. You, the cyclist, are in control of how challenging you want it to be by choosing the resistance on your bicycle throughout the ride.

What to expect

If you're new to spinning, we suggest arriving 10- 15 minutes before class begins, that way the instructor can show you how to properly adjust your bike to fit your body, show you how to clip in and clip out of the pedals if you have cycling shoes, and answer any other questions you may have. Cycling shoes are not required by most locations, though some specialty studios may require you to wear them but usually will supply them to you at no charge if it's your first class. Most gyms and studios have bikes that are fitted for both tennis shoes and cycling shoes, but it's a good idea to call and check first.

You'll also want to wear comfortable clothing. Classes are usually packed and it gets warm, think Amazon rain forest warm, so dress with that in mind. Bring water (extra water) and a towel to wipe away the sweat. You are going to sweat, a lot.

Spin class is a great way to meet new people, burn calories, and have fun. It's also a great conditioning class for athletes who want to increase their endurance levels while taking it easy on the joints. Spin class is offered at most big corporate gyms and specialty studios both of which can be found throughout any city. We've linked a few of our favorites below:
