5 Hidden Benefits of Play for Adults

What we need are excuses to play!

Jan 10, 2016 by Ally M

When it comes to getting and staying active for the sake of our health, most of us conjure images of treadmills, weight machines and early mornings at the gym – not exactly the stuff of childhood memories. But why do we think working out has to be work?

In fact, we may be able to best impact our health by taking a page out of our childhood playbook – to just get out and play once in a while.

  1. Play to Increase Earning Potential
What's that you say, play to make more money? It may sound too good to be true, but a study discussed in the Wall Street Journal shows that playing on a team can boost your earning potential, in both tangible and intangible ways. Be it improved health, competitiveness, social skills or a combination of those and more, the study found that playing can bring in the same additional earning potential as an extra year of schooling.
  2. Play to Boost Creativity
Cliché as it may be, there's a reason why startups around the globe flaunt their ping pong tables, game rooms and foosball tournaments – play encourages creativity and innovation. It also helps you see things from a different perspective, helping with problem solving and adapting to a fast-paced environment.
  3. Play to Improve Social Skills
Nobody likes being picked last for dodgeball, but everyone loves to play. Getting out and playing with friends on an intramural team can help keep your social skills fresh, something that can waste away with hours spent in a cubicle farm.

Even better, pop up games can introduce you to new friends, broadening your circle and experiences, opening you up to new things. There are even apps, like Physi, that can help you find new activities or new people to play with.
  4. Play to Relieve Stress
Do you remember being stressed as a kid? We don't either. And while it's certainly not just that simple, play encourages the production of endorphins – a.k.a. the feel good hormones – which help relieve stress and make us feel happier.
  5. Play to Get Active
Let's take a look at the first and most obvious benefit of play: It's a sneaky way to get in your exercise! Whether it's basketball, baseball, tennis or even a casual Saturday afternoon round of cornhole, playing with friends gets you up and moving.

Exercise doesn't have to be boring – just get your play on to get your workout in. Even more traditional forms of exercise are getting a playful makeover – look no further than the Color Run, Electric Run, Cupid's Undie Run and other fun events to see how play can be incorporated in your routine.

When you were a kid, it was easy finding friends to do things with. As adults we have schedules, kids, responsibilities and the list goes on. We have all kinds of excuses not to play. Download Physi and select the activity, your skill level, then schedule a time to play. If you don't have a friend available, find someone from a neighborhood nearby to get started. What we need are excuses to play.
